Ayyappan Theeyattu Part 2

Ayyappan Theeyattu is an old ritual performed in the temples of Sasthavu (the primeval concept of Lord Ayyappan). It is around a thousand years old and is popular especially in the northern parts of Kerala.

This art form is historically significant as it is very old and is associated with temple rituals. The play in this video portrays the love between Lord Shiva and Mohini (the enchantress incarnation of Lord Vishnu).

Their divine union begets a child. But Mohini is unable to deliver the child as she is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu who is a masculine god. Eventually Lord Shiva advises Mohini to make three cuts on his right thigh to facilitate the delivery of the child.
