Killimangalam, a small village in Thrissur district reached new heights in the year 2006 when UNESCO awarded its seal of excellence to the Kora grass mats produced here. Here, the members of the local Kurava community collect Kora grass and it is later weaved into the mats of amazing variety.
The grass is sliced to very thin pieces and the slices are used in the weaving process. It is an equal blend of indigenous material, craftsmanship and aesthetic sense. U Chammy, a grass mat waver from Killimangalam was awarded with the Master Craftsperson award of the Union Ministry of Textiles in 1992.
