Oriental Scops Owl or Otus sunia

With 500 varieties of birds, and with 16 endemic species, Kerala, a small southern Indian state is an ornithologist’s delight.

Oriental Scops Owl (Otus sunia) is a kind of owl found in dry deciduous forests of Southern Asian countries. It is remarkable for its shrill, far-reaching hoot.

These birds are medium sized and have a brownish complexion. It helps them to remain unnoticed when they rest on tree trunks. Their preys include insects, reptiles, small mammals like rats and small birds. They are also notable for their keen sense of hearing.

Purely nocturnal in nature, Oriental Scops Owls come out at night-time. Sometimes they can be seen roosting with half-shut eyes and slim upright posture inside thick foliage.
