In the earlier days when wrist watches were not common, there were clock towers and sirens for the public. This video presents the siren of Kottayam municipal town.

The siren installed more than half a century ago functions even today. (The video was shot in December 2009). The siren can be heard at 1 AM, 5 AM , 8 AM,1PM, 5 PM, and 8 PM.It is also used to communicate situations like the death of national or state leaders (3 sirens) and calamities like fire breakouts (3 sirens).

The siren is audible within a radius of around 3-5 kilometres.The siren may bring nostalgic memories to many people who have lived in Kottayam municipal town.
