Betwa River in the city of Orchha, Madhya Pradesh

It is the river which had cradled a civilization that once changed the face of the central Indian society. Betwa, also known as Vetravati, has found mention in ancient pieces of Indian literature, like Mahabharata and Meghaduta.

Rudra Pratap, a powerful king of the Bundela dynasty, chose the banks of Betwa river to build up the city of Orchha, which later became the capital of his empire.

Betwa, flowing through the state of Madhya Pradesh, is a tributary of river Yamuna. It originates in the Vindhya ranges, flows through Madhya Pradesh and joins Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh.
