Patanjali

The great sage who lived in India between AD 300 and AD 400. Legend says that Patanjali was the incarnation of Adisesha, the Lord of Serpents on whose coils Lord Vishnu reclines. His mother was Gonika.

Apart from the Yoga Sutra, Patanjali has written various treatises on Ayurveda and a classical work on grammar titled Mahabhashya. Some scholars believe that the author of Mahabhashya is another Patanjali. Nevertheless as the profounder of yoga philosophy, Patanjali occupies an exalted position.

Commentary on the Yoga Sutra was written by Vyasa (AD 500) and King Bhoja (AD 1000).
