Built in north Indian a Naagra style of architecture the Durga Mandir or temple was constructed during 18th century by a Bengali Maharani at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. There is nice, intricately done stone carving visible on the walls of this structure. The shape of the temple is made up of many small spires (shikhara) conjoined together. The temple is painted red with ochre representing the power of Durga. It is also called Monkey temple because of the presence of large number of monkeys.

Located in the southern part of Varanasi city nearby the temple lies a rectangular pond known as Durga Kund. The ‘Kund’ (means pond) was connected to the river earlier but now it is closed. Thousands of devotees visit the temple during Navaratri festival.
