Kutiyattam-Part-4

This video presents Kailasodharanam, one of the important episodes from the epic Ramayana. The play depicts the thoughts of King Ravana, the ruler of Lanka who muses about the curses after his attempt to lift Mount Kailasa, the abode of Lord Shiva.

The play is performed by Kalamandalam Sivan Namboodiri, a maestro in Kutiyattam dance drama. Kutiyattam is an old traditional dance performed as a temple ritual in specially made theatres called Koothambalams. The main attraction of this dance form is the performer who portrays all the characters in the play all by himself.

In this video, you can see the performer acting like an elephant, snake and a lion which Ravana finds on his way before lifting Mount Kailasa.
