Aizawl

Aizawl, the capital of the  state of Mizoram, India, is situated on a high ridge, surrounded on the east by the green valleys and by beautiful, high craggy hills on the north. Mizoram, the 23rd state of the Indian Union, is situated near the southernmost tip of the North-Eastern states. The populace is made up mostly of Mizos who are believed to have come from North western China. The word Mizo means a highlander. This scenic  city, of Mizoram, India though the largest in Mizoram, is still remote and is located 3715 feet from sea level. Aizawl is the religious and cultural centre of the Mizos It is the most populous town in the state.

The Mizoram State Museum situated at Macdonald’s Hill, though small, is a rich treasure house of historical relics, traditional implements, artifacts and ancient costumes an inevitable component of your travel plan.  The Bara Bazar is the main shopping centre with stalls selling garments and other commodities. This is where people dressed in traditional costumes can best be seen. The Luangmual Handicrafts Centre which is 7 kms away from the city is the place where the ‘Khumbeu’ ceremonial bamboo bat is made using waterproof’ hnahthial’ leaves.

Another interesting place worth a visit is the beautiful, craggy Durtlang Hills which offer a spectacular view of Aizawl. The mini Zoological Garden houses birds and animals that are found only in Mizoram.
