Bonderam

Date    :   27  August 2011
Venue :  Divar Island, 12 km from Panjim, Goa

The festival consists of processions and mock battles in remembrance of the bloody disputes which took place over property on the island.

The disputes occurred between two wards or sections of the village - Piedalda and Sao Mathias – and led to bloodshed and sometimes, death. In order to curb these, the Portuguese introduced a system of demarcation of boundaries with flags of various nations. The rival groups knocked down the demarcation flags.

Today, fotash (toy weapons made of bamboo stem and berries) are used as missiles in a mock fight to knock down an offending flag. The people who participate in the fight later come together to eat and drink in merriment.

On the day of the Bonderam carnival, each ward of the village will exhibit a float that is sponsored by a prominent business house. Besides this, every house will be elaborately decorated. There is also a gala feast.
