Siliguri, an entry point to north eastern states of India

Siliguri is situated in the district of Darjeeling in the Indian state of west Bengal. The second largest city in West Bengal, Siliguri’s strategic location makes it the main entry point to the north-eastern states of Sikkim, Gangtok and even the neighbouring countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh. It takes just half an hour’s drive in any direction to reach the dense forest or to start climbing the hills. The group of hill stations around Siliguri makes it an attractive tourist spot. Now Siliguri is fast developing into an important hub of trade and commerce for the northeast. How ever the city is endowed with lush greenery, rolling hills, gurgling rivers and vast tea plantations with a pleasant climate throughout the year.

The North Bengal Science centre, located in the suburbs of the city showcases many scientific gadgets and equipments, besides having a small planetarium and a Nature Interpretation centre that displays the region’s varied flora and fauna. The ISKON temple dedicated to Lord Krishna is considered to be the largest of its kind in north east India. Thed Sed-Gyued Monastery, in Salgura, which is a renowned centre for Buddhist Studies, has 100 feet tall Stupa containing five types of relics. The Kalachakra Monastery is also an interesting place to visit. Just 18 km from the city lies the Mahananda Wildlife sanctuary. The Coronation Bridge or Sevoke Bridge is an important bridge of the northeast. Built in 1930, it is a good example of British skill in design and architecture The Madhuban Park and Surya Sen Park are two very popular picnic spots. Siliguri is a travel destination with a lot to offer to the tourists.
