About 'Busy looms at Balaramapuram'

Balaramapuram in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, India, is known for its tradition of producing handloom fabric. Here the weavers use a primitive type of throw-shuttle pit looms. It was during the regime of King Maharaja Balaraja Varma (1798 to 1810) that the handloom industry was first introduced in Balaramapuram. The weavers belonging to Saliya community migrated to this region from Tamil Nadu. The Kasavu Sari (saree) and mundu produced here are well known. Kerala Tourism has set up a handloom village project here.
