Amarnath Yatra

Date    :   1 July -  24 August, 2011
Venue :  Holy Amarnath Cave, Jammu and Kashmir

The Amarnath Yatra is the pilgrimage undertaken by Hindu devotees to the holy cave of Amarnath, during the month of July and August.

According to legends, Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvathi the secret of creation and eternal life while in this cave. A pair of doves eavesdropped on the unsuspecting divine couple. Having been privy to this secret, they are reborn again and again and have made this cave their eternal abode.

The annual yatra or pilgrimage to the cave, situated 14000 ft. above sea level, is organised by the Jammu & Kashmir State Government from the 1st of July to the 24th of August. Devotees from all over the country participate in the pilgrimage.

The Yatra, conducted by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board, starts from Pahalgam and Sonmarg and goes right upto the cave, crossing glaciers and mountains. The pilgrims are allowed darshan or entry to this holy spot from Ashard Purnimashi to Shravan Purnimashi - a period of over a month or so.
