Balivadham Part 4- Kutiyattam

Kutiyattam is a famous classical theater form which originated in Kerala and is believed to be two millennia old. Kutiyattam literally means ‘combined acting’ and is performed mostly by the chakiyars (a sub caste in Hindu community). It is usually performed in Sanskrit language in Hindu temples in specially made theatres known as Koothambalams.

This video features Balivadham, a citation in Kutiyattam performance and an eventful chapter in the epic Ramayana. The play portrays the killing of Bali, the ruler of Kishkinta (the land of monkey men) by Lord Rama as requested by Sugriva, the sibling of Bali. Sugriva in turn offers his help to Rama to kill the demon king Ravana. Eventually Rama kills Bali.
