Drupka Tseshi

Date    :   August 3, 2011
Venue :  Muguthang, Sikkim

Drupka Tseshi marks the day on which Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on the ‘Four Noble Truths’ to his first five disciples at Sarnath.

The festival is held on the fourth day of the sixth month in the Buddhist lunar calendar. However, the dates differ from region to region. Hence, Tibet and Bhutan may celebrate it on a day different from that for Sikkim or Darjeeling.

In Muguthang in extreme North Sikkim, the main celebration is a Yak race whereas in Gangtok, Drupka Tsheshi is marked by prayers at the Deer Park. Throughout Darjeeling and Sikkim, Buddhist temples and monasteries hold prayers and religious ceremonies.
