Hemkund : Experiencing India

Located in the scenic Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, Hemkund is one of many lakes in the Himalayas and respected and admired for its dramatic view of the surreal landscape. Situated at 4500 m above sea level, this beacon of natural splendor sits proud amongst seven of the most arresting mountain peaks in all the Himalayas.

Although the pilgrimage site is lovely to visit at any time of the year, it is said the best time to visit is between July and September. Because of the altitude, the religious site can only be visited by horseback. A traveler must begin in Govindghat, 15 km away from the lake, which is nestled between the two rivers Alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga. 13 km away, the village of Gobindham or Ghandgaria will offer a weary traveler rest for the night.  Whether you move along or stay the night, it is a 5000 foot climb.

A Religious Rendezvous
This trip is certainly worth the effort, because of the tourist location of Hemkund Sahib Gurudwara, where it is said that Guru Gobind Singh meditated in one of his previous lives and became unified with God. This very religious area is also known to be the starting point for the hike up to the renowned Valley of the Flowers.

A Fairytale Locale
Located three km from Ghangaria at an altitude of 3000m, two km by ten km long, the Valley of the Flowers is literally a dream en rose. Discovered by Frank Smith many years ago, today this botany lover’s paradise is both a National Park and World Site, and hosts and breeds over 500 species of wild flowers.

Mini vacations
During your stay in this natural wonderland, there are plenty of smaller tourist areas to visit that aren’t as exhausting to reach. For instance, if you’d like to take your time on your hike up to Hemkund, take a moment to enjoy the sparkling jewel that is lake Kagbhusandi Tal, which lies at an altitude of 5,230 m. This peaceful utopia is easily reached by trekking through Bhyundar Village which is positioned near Gangharia.

If you’d like to break loose and explore the areas around your original destination, there are great venues and activities to experience that are positioned close to the original vacation site. Auli situated in the Garhwal Himalayas at an altitude of 9000 ft. is home to Nanda Devi with some of the most exhilarating ski slopes in the entire world. The Auli-India ski resort offers a great time for a reasonable price.
