Brusha Sankranti also known as Vrushabha Sankranti or Vrushabha Sankraman is the auspicious day that marks the transition of the sun (Surya sankraman) from the Mesha rasi (Aries zodiac) to the Vrushabha rasi (Taurus zodiac).

In 2011, the day of Vrushabha Sankranti falls on May 14 and the exact time of the transition – the Sankranti time - is 1:03 pm.
The day is of great significance to the people of Orissa where devotes perform the Sankraman Snan – a ritualistic bath –in rivers and the sea in remembrance of dead ancestors and Surya Bhagvan, the Sun God. It is also an important day for Vishnu devotees who perform special prayers and rituals.

In Puri, the capital of Orissa, devotees throng the bathing ghats in large numbers to perform the Brusha sankranti snan in Puri snan ghats. They also visit the Puri Jagannath temple and offer special pujas.

Vrushibha is the Sanskrit term used to refer to the bull. It is also another name for Lord Shiva’s carrier, Nandi. Brusha Sankranti marks the beginning of the Vrushabha month of the solar calendars followed in Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. However, the names of the month may vary from place to place.
