Chosker

Date    :   April - May, 2011
Venue :  Villages of Arunachal Pradesh

The Chosker is not really a festival but a religious ritual of the Monpas, Buddhists of the northern state of Arunachal Pradesh in India.

This ritualistic event begins with the reading of the scriptures by the priests or the Lamas in the Buddhist temples (Buddhist temples are also known as Gompas). The reading of the scriptures goes on for a few days after which a procession, led by the senior Lama, is taken out by the villagers with some of them carrying the holy books on their backs. The procession with the holy books goes around all the fields of the village as it is believed to guarantee a good crop, protection from pests and wild animals, as well as bring prosperity for the villagers.

The Chosker ritualistic event is usually performed during the arid summer months of April-May. During this time, all physical activity in the outdoors is suspended for a prescribed period of time.
