Nehru Trophy Boat Race

The annual Nehru Trophy Boat Race, on the Punnamada backwaters in Alappuzha district, is a fascinating race of various types of country boats. It is attended by thousands, including foreigners.

The highlight of the event, on the second Saturday of August, is the race of the snake boats or chundan valloms. These majestic boats are rowed by around 100 oarsmen.

The trophy was instituted by Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. Besides the race, there is also a water regatta with spectacular floats.
