Rekha Panchami

Date    :   August 18, 2011
Venue :  Orissa

The Rekha Panchami of Orissa, celebrated as Raksha Panchami in other places, is observed on the fifth day in the second half of the month of Shravan. It is dedicated to Lord Bhairava, one of the forms of Lord Shiva.

Rekha Panchami – the rekha is a boundary line of protection - is observed for protection from and of wild animals. It usually falls on fifth day after the ritual of Raksha Bhandan.

On Raksha Panchami day, paintings of Batuka Bhairav or Bhairab, Ganesh and Mahadev (Shiva) are drawn on the doors of houses. Some devotees draw Nandi, the vehicle of Lord Shiva, on their back doors. On top of the front door, an invocation to Lord Shiva is written on a palm leaf and hung, along with some kusha grass and a small packet of rice.

At night, small offerings are made to wild animals and snakes.
