Vamana is a purificatory process in Ayurveda intended mainly for the expulsion of vitiated Kapha. This is a painless drug induced emetic process. Vamana cures diseases or health problems like acne, asthma, arthritis, chronic cold, diabetes and various other Kapha disorders.

After three to seven days of oil therapy, external and internal, the patient is then subjected to the second stage sweating therapy. Oil and sweat therapies form part of purvakarma.

On the day of the pradhanakarma, the main treatment, the patient is given the emetic. After half an hour, the patient starts to vomit. To stimulate further vomiting, he is given warm diluted milk at intervals. Once the stomach becomes empty, the vomiting will automatically shop.

The patient is advised to take complete rest after the treatment.
