Coonoor

Coonoor, a beautiful hill station, situated in the Nilgiris district in the  state of Tamil Nadu,South India is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris. A travel plan to Nilgiris without Coonoor remains incomplete. Lying at an altitude of 1858 m, and surrounded by tea plantations, it is a quietly serene and peaceful hill station enjoying a temperate climate throughout the year. It was discovered by the British who sought to escape from the scorching heat of the plains and lured by the pleasant climate, many Englishmen settled down there. Coonoor is divided into Upper and lower parts with the residences being located in the Upper Coonoor and the markets and commercial establishments occupying Lower Coonoor.

Coonoor is ideal for a week end getaway and has many interesting places worth visiting. Dolphin’s Nose, 12 kms from Coonoor gives an enchanting view of Catherine Falls. Sim’s Park in Upper Coonoor is a park-cum-botanical garden, located in the midst of a ravine spread over 12 hectares and has over 1000 species of trees, plants and flowers. Lamb’s Rock, 8 kms from Coonoor, is a sheer precipice of several hundred metres and provides a panoramic view of Coimbatore. Law’s Falls, Kateri Falls and St. Catherine Falls are three breathtakingly beautiful waterfalls that   attract many visitors. The Droog fortress, said to have been used by Tipu Sultan as an outpost is just 17 kms from Coonoor.Its environs offer excellent opportunities for bird watching. Those interested in trekking can find ideal locations in Coonoor. From Coonoor one can travel easily to Ooty which is just 19 kms away
