Feast of St. Lawrence

Date    :  August 10, 2011
Venue :  Goa

The Feast of St. Lawrence is celebrated all over Goa, usually in the latter half of August. This year, however, the day of the feast falls on the 10th of August. It celebrates the reopening of the sandbars of River Mandovi, at the end of the monsoon, to river traffic. It is also the beginning of the fishing season.

St. Lawrence lived a life in service to the poor and the destitute. Thus, on this day dedicated to him, people donate money to the needy, organize free meals and so on to honor the saint. Fishermen throng churches to seek the blessings of St. Lawrence to ensure a good season.
