The St. Mary’s Church at Koilmukku in Edathua, renamed as St. George Church and now better known as St. George Forane Church, Edathua, is one of the prominent churches under the archdiocese of Chaganacherry. Founded on September 29, 1810, the Edathua Church wields a profound influence on the spiritual, material, social and educational life of thousands in and around Edathua.

The annual festival - the feast of St. George - is celebrated in honour of the church’s patron saint, in the month of Medam (April-May). During the festival, the statue of St. George, decked in gold, is taken out in procession and then placed on the dais at the centre of the Basilica where it will remain throughout the duration of the feast.

The other attractions of the festival include a remarkably lavish feast served for 11 days in a row, daily processions, fireworks, music and dance. Many pilgrims from all over South India take part in the processions.
