Sasan Gir

Sasan Gir, an internationally recognized national park is situated 65 km southeast of a small city called Junagadh in Gujarat state of north-west India. Sasan Gir belongs to Kathiawar Peninsula. Ahmedabad is 385 km away from Sasan Gir.

Sasan Gir National Park:
Sasan Gir is renowned for its national park and sanctuary which is the sole abode of the Asiatic lions. The natural park covers an area of nearly 258 sq km and the sanctuary spreads over 1153 sq km. It was established in 1965.

Surveys show that there are nearly 300 Asiatic lions in this park and sanctuary. Tourists can also spot leopards, four horned antelopes, jungle cats, hyenas, mongoose, jackals, wild boars, chinkara, sambar, nilgai etc. Rare flora and fauna are seen here.

Tourists can also utilize the rocky terrain here for trekking and rock climbing. Visitors can see numerous streams within the Sasan Gir Park.

Crocodile Breeding Farm:
Tourists must visit this farm to have a look at the famous marsh crocodiles in this park.

Nalsarovar Lake and Bird Sanctuary:
Bird watchers must visit the bird sanctuary within Sasan Gir Park. It has a huge collection of over 300 species of birds. Kingfishers, pelican, fishing eagle, wading birds etc., are some of the inhabitants of this place. Boats are available to set out for a ride in the lake.

Pilgrim spots:
Near the sanctuary lie two pilgrim spots namely Kanaki Mata temple and Tulsishyam temple. Near these temples tourists can see hot sulphur springs.

Little Rann of Kutch:
This is a famous preserve for the wild ass. The biggest of this kind is located in Kutch.

Chorwad:
This is a tiny coastal village which is 30 km from Sasan Gir Park. Tourists can relax in the beach here and watch the fishing activities of the locals.

Somnath Temple:
This temple is 45 km away from the park. It is believed that Somraj, the Moon God constructed this temple. Later it was renovated by Ravana, Lord Krishna and Bhimdev.

Kamaleshwar Dam:
This is located ten km away from Sasan in the middle of Sasan Gir Park. It was built across the Hiran river. Tourists can watch various birds here.

The nearest airport is 90 km away in Keshod. Junagadh is the railhead nearest to this park. It is also well connected by roadways.
